Prima (Schulschrift)

Project Description

›Prima‹ was developed to teach children to read and write in a simple and engaging way. It was commissioned by the Wiener Bildungsserver/Vienna Education Server and will be available worldwide free of charge as open source.
The two previous Austrian models for teaching running writing, from 1969 and 1995 respectively (teachers are free to choose which model to follow), are no longer in line with recent findings from developmental psychology and handwriting ergonomics.
Furthermore, the currently available typefaces are inadequately digitised. The quality of the drawings is not suitable to serve as a model for learning to write, let alone to instil an appreciation of formal accomplishment in the learner. The same applies for the connections between letters, which either defy logical letter constructions, or fail in terms of their digital implementation. In sum, current digital types intended to teach reading and writing produce texts that are formally wholly unsuitable for the task.
