THE PHOTO ALBUM is the companion publication to the eponymous exhibition in the series “INN SITU” at the BTV Stadtforum in Innsbruck in 2019. It was unique, for unlike in previous instalments the focus was not on original visual material by an artist but on a photo album acquired on eBay that was dated 1912 and documented a trip taken by three unknown protagonists. A blank narrative space, which gave the Vorarlberg-born author Verena Roßbacher carte blanche to combine photography and literature.
As a book in a book, it also formally addresses the polarity between objectivity and fiction. A classic catalogue, coated paper, clear layout: historical photos, exhibition views, factual texts. In between, however, is a piece of literary fiction in which design and content converge in an experimental symbiosis. Text fragments interweave with image details; the layout is interrupted, photos zoomed in on, the content flows over the borders of pages and gives rise, as one reads, to new meaning.
