This art book explores the question of collective identity and belonging of the inhabitants of the Alpine region. The relationship between people and their surroundings or between city and landscape is examined through photographic staging, collages, graphics and texts.

The artist Nicole Weniger takes up a myth about Innsbruck's local mountain, one which was still taught in schools a few decades ago: the Patscherkofel as an extinct volcano.
Vulcania draws us into a fictional world on our doorstep that, in reference to the past, touches on important issues in our real world today. With the introduction of a completely different species, Weniger takes the assumption of a Tyrolean primal nature ad absurdum.
