Project Description

The book is based on photos documenting creation of the socialist utopian city of Tychy from the 1950s to 1980s, taken by Zygmunt Kubski, the author's grandfather. By framing and juxtaposing fragments of photos, the author looks at everyday life in Tychy. She follows passers-by in photographs, looking for familiar faces, focusing on small fragments of photographs, in contrary to original cityscapes. The graphic design follows the principles defined by the author. The typography mimics playful scale of the elements, while the compositions guide reader through the spreads. The seemingly motionless photos are thriving with movement when enlarged, dividing pictures between the spreads highlights this effect. The use of two colours and different types of halftone emphasizes the structure of the book. The printing method – risography – made it possible to obtain effects referring to original prints. As a result, each copy is unique and the photographic material has a raw, newspaperlike feel.
