This catalog was created to accompany the exhibition at the MAK in Vienna. In the course of the museum’s research, it was possible to identify some 180 women artists who were active in the context
of the Wiener Werkstätte (1903–1932). This is the first time that most of them will be presented to the public. The catalog reveals above all the boundless innovation, as well as the emancipatory potential, of female decorative artists at this time. The cover design—a collage of fabric patterns, objects, and original lettering—is intended not only to show the creative range of these women artists, but also to put a representative face to the 180 names. The collage references the stock character of the “new woman” of the 1920s, who—short-haired, extravagant, and a smoker—takes on an independent and confident role in society. The chapter pages bear collages of fabric patterns by the WW’s women artists. The book’s appendix contains the women artists’ meticulously researched biographies.
