The Skins of the Cities (Шкіра міст in Ukrainian) is a debut poetry collection by Olena Pavlova, a prominent Ukrainian cultural journalist, and illustrator.
The book is typeset in two fonts by Ukrainian type designers and printed in two colors.
The book is decorated with calligraphy. Each chapter uses a separate style according to the themes of the poetry.
The author provided a photo reproduction of her painting for the cover and her photos of the cityscapes for the illustrations.
The project was designed primarily using software by Affinity Serif. Calligraphy was developed both digitally and by hand (leaving a ton of paper with drafts).
The main goal was to provide a reader with an immersive book experience.
