Rustling reeds, sluggish footsteps in the mud, a howl – silence. Rotting fish in the trees and creepy harp sounds under the weeping willow at night. The merman is moody, changeable and unpredictable, like water itself. This short animation sequence is a new interpretation based on the children‘s story „The Little Merman“ by Otfried Preussler. In old legends and tales, however, the essence of the merman is a malicious ghost in a wide variety of forms, who lures people with his music and pulls them under water. My concept brings back this original mysticism and horror and makes the most of the eerie atmosphere at the ponder. The viewer‘s imagination creates an image of the being without clearly showing it. This short film works as a teaser, suggestion and starting point for possibly more complex elaborations.
