A „LANGER SATZ“ (long sentence/long letterpress print) is spoken, written, set in lead and wooden type along a track 12cm wide and 16m long; coated in ink, printed on 16m of paper and performed live accompanied by music.
This project combining speech, music and print was conceptualised in 2007 by Christian Fuchs, and presented at the International Jazz Festival Saalfelden 2021 with the language artist Christian Reiner and the contrabassist Christian Weber.
With the help of Christian’s partner Heidrun, two MMA students and an art school intern, the 16m long sentence was manually typeset out of about 15 different typefaces and type sizes from the stores of the Druckwerkstatt der grafischen Künste over a period of a few days.
40 colourful rolls of paper were printed with dark blue-black offset ink as a limited edition; 5 more as a special edition in gold on black. Rolled up in a jam jar, the LANGER SATZ can be preserved for a long time.
