This is a book illustration project for a haiku collection, entitled “East of me”. Haiku poems were written by me.

I started this project as a poetry book design study. It was supposed to be full of colorful art illustrating haiku poems. My idea was to add some modern feeling to the very traditional poetry genre. Illustrations are somewhat abstract and bright, though the style includes broad brush strokes inherent to oriental tradition.

As I started working on this project, the war broke out. Suddenly the images took on another, more tragic meaning. Texts that accompany these illustrations also started sounding dark. And so this experiment received a life of its own.
