Women were allowed to compete as tennis players for the first time at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. WILDCARD focuses on women’s participation in the Olympics, which began with tennis. The trophy (inspired by the poster design of the time) honors this momentous step and is augmented with a timeline of the various sports and the first participation of a woman in each. What remains startling, however, is the length of time it took for the various sports to become accessible.
The trophy is modeled with the 3D printer, thus combining progress with the classic design. A closer look reveals the timeline in the glossy white typography. The tennis ball encased in the trophy bears the branded title “Wildcard”, which in tennis is a term for special permission for unqualified athletes to still participate in a competition.
